Meet your meat?

Fri Nov 16, 2007, 9:19 AM
I have been a vegetarian by choice for 14 years now. I loved meat, and still miss the taste of it to this day, but as a kid I sat down and thought about how wrong animals are being treated, and simply stopped eating it. A lot of people don't understand when I tell them why I don't wanna eat meat- they say things like "animals are meant to be eaten" or animals don't have feelings. My problem with the whole thing though is that these animals live under the worst conditions you can imagine. They never see the sunlight, they live in a overcrowded box, hurting themselves and eachother due to stress, they are being fed the remains of other dead animals and all kinds of other stuff such as antibiotics and hormones. Of course they will get sick, but hey, we'll just destroy them like a product that doesn't work right and bury them in a mass grave- just as long as we don't get sick everything is ok! So when I tell people this they just say "I try not to think about that" and they keep eating their burgers. Why shouldn't there be a picture of a mutilated animal on the meat wrap just like they put those pictures of dead babies on a pack of cigarettes? Why always make such a secret of it? I can tell you one thing: if I ever have a child, I will drag that kid to the slaughterhouse and show her where her bacon comes from, and then let her make the choice!

What do you think of all this? Please voice your opinions as this subject is very important to me....

I can completely understand why a person would not want to eat meat and feel like they were supporting such a horrible thing.
Ive seen what it's like in the meat processing factries, and I agree that it's horrible.
But the reason that I still eat meat is simple.
I like it, and its what humans were meant to eat.
Without it, you would probably have to take protien pills to stay completely healthy or something, anyway.
I do hate the way that the animals are treated, but that can't be stopped simply by refusal to eat meat.
I look at it this way:
If I don't eat it, then they would have suffered for nothing, and the worlds resources would just be wasted.
So yeah...Im happy to see that people still stand up for what they think it right, though. And the fact that you put it in a respectful manner was awesome of you ^__^

thank you for replying. well, that is exactly my point though: i never said that we aren't supposed to eat meat, cause we are. but i am saying that we should respect other beings more. if we absolutely have to eat meat, can;t we at least make sure to buy the meat from a local farmer rather than support the unnecessary massproduction? let's face it: in the end this is what not only makes the animals sick, but humans as well.

I've been vegetarian for two years now and I'm healthy! inspite of all those people who say me "this thing will make you sick" or something like that...
I can say I feel better now..not just in my soul!

I had a little farm when I was I child and I've seen several kinds of animals been killed,in a painfully way...and it shocked me...
(I didn't know that rabbits had their own call untill I saw one of them dying...It's been terrible..)

Just when I met my ex boyfriend I knew that it was concretely possible substituting animal proteins with vegetables ones..I must admit that I was a bit sceptic before..

The less I hurt some creature (human or not, directly or not) the best I feel..

I can just say..everyone has to be responsable for its own choices,so be carefull doing yours!

Thanks you for posting this. yes, i feel very good too. i get enough protein and can assure everybody that i am very healthy. and eversince i started eating those soy products i even gained quite some weight hehehe... (they are not all good, but if you buy the right ones they are delicious!) but i am happy to hear that at least some people think the same way i do. i suppose the majority of people are just misinformed or just plain selfish.

I've been a vegetarian for some seven years now, but it's mostly for ecological and pragmatic reasons rather than ethical. I also happen to be a philosopher and find ethical questions particularly problematic. Not to say that treating animals badly is accetable by any means, I just mean that due to the difficulty of convincing people that your normative decisions are better than theirs (and indeed deciding on your own normative principles), defending vegetarianism might be more fruitful in ecological and related terms.

For instance, the meat industry wastes a lot of energy: producing meat takes roughly ten times the energy of producing, say, corn. Not to mention costs, pollution and wasted energy due to transporting the animals around etc. Of course, there are also effective arguments in terms of health: BSE, bird flu, blue tongue.. all of these are side products of the meat industry.

There are some soy product that are delicious also for non-vegetarians! (my mum for exemple! :giggle:)

Anyway...
I think too that there's a lot of misinformation..
but there are lots of people that what to keep the "status quo"...thay just care to change the least as possible...particularly when it's not a painless change..
Being vegetarian is not so easy (especially when someone invites you for lunch/dinner! :XD:)

I'm glad to talk with you about this metter...

I try to be a conscientious meat eater. I choose cuts and types of meat that label right on the packaging that the animal is either free range, grain fed or certified organic. I love meat, I love cooking and I don't want to stop enjoying it, but I do love animals, and I don't want to see them harmed.

It makes buying meat more expensive, and I tend to stick with the higher end cuts because I can at least guarantee some proper handling, but it's only a small way in going to end the cruelty.

What gets my goat so to speak is the unethical treatment of animals used in testing facilities. I refuse to use products that have been tested on animals, and thankfully over the years this trend has withered in the face of public criticism. The one thing I agree with though is medical testing. Again I stress the ethical treatment, but I also understand that without animals, rats especially, some of the diseases that we suffer from would never have found a cure.

Perhaps it is selfish, and I know there are some people that would see it that way. But as long as the animals in question are not being mishandled and if the benefits outweigh the side effects, I'm willing to let my hatred of animal testing slide in certain cases.

And this just got longer than I intended ^_^. That's just my two cents, thanks for posting this!

It really depends how old they are when you bring them in. Before 10 is usually a bad idea as the nutrients meat has and veggies don't are really important at this time. Not to mention that its pretty traumatic of an experience to the child. In teenage years, the child should be able to make the choice.
